First American Financial Data Breach Possibly Caused By Application Defect

First American Financial believes that the recent data breach could have been caused by a design defect in one of its applications, according to recent report from InsuranceJournal.

The company revealed that it shutdown access to the application in order to assess the impact of the security flaw.

"We are currently evaluating what effect, if any, this had on the security of customer information. We have hired an outside forensic firm to assure us that there has not been any meaningful unauthorized access to our customer data,” First American said in an emailed statement, according to the report.

First American Financial is responsible for title insurances and settlement services for the mortgage and real estate industry, according to KrebsOnSecurity.

The breach may have exposed sensitive buyer and seller information including Social Security numbers, drivers licenses, account statements and more.
